Ethan looked up from his papers when I walked in and smiled at the carryout bags.
“Dinner for me?” he asked.
I nodded. “Of course.” But I figured he’d already eaten. Dinner with Steven had taken a long time—five hours. Once I put the food away, I plopped down in the seat next to Ethan.
His nostrils flared. He leaned into me, inhaled, and frowned. “Tell me, when you and Steven are together are you engaged in some weird Tantric hug-fest? You smell like him. It’s like you two are one.” He attempted to make his statement light and lively, but there was an undercurrent of steel and tinges of jealousy.
I stroked his cheek. “It was just a hug. He won’t come near me. You all have successfully indoctrinated him in all the pack’s rules and heightened his sensitivity to impropriety. We don’t sit on the same side of the booth anymore.”
“That’s good, because that’s just odd for anyone to do if there’s a seat available across from each other.” His lips quirked. “Winter’s right, you two are pretty peculiar.”
“What’s weird is me having to get a crown, because apparently I’m the pack’s ‘princess’ and you can’t bear for me to feel any form of discomfort, pain, or denial in any way,” I said in a dramatic, haughty voice. “Interesting. That’s going to be a full-time job, protecting me from life.”
His brows furrowed. “What?”
“You told Steven he needed to tell me what was going on with Taylor’s transfer.”
Ethan chuckled, amused. “I live for the day that you feel some discomfort from Steven and my brother. The day when you ask them to do something and they actually say no. I’d like a front-row seat for that monumental event. Sky denied. Priceless. But it will never happen because they can’t bear to see the face. Steven hadn’t made a decision and it bothered you. You didn’t know if he was coming back and that’s where your anxiety was coming from. It wasn’t fair to you or the pack. He’d hold off and try to never tell you because he didn’t want to see the face. If he wasn’t coming back, you needed to know so you could deal with it. Steven leaving would trigger a grieving process for you.”
There was a long stretch of silence as he studied me. “Steven may eventually leave this pack—you know that, right?”
I swallowed a ragged breath but couldn’t answer—didn’t want to answer.
“He’ll be an Alpha one day and I don’t want him to be reluctant to do what he needs to because he can’t bear to see the face. It’s not fair.”
“The face—my face.” I would rather discuss anything other than the inevitability of Steven leaving. More changes that seemed to be coming far too fast. I would never want him to decline doing something he wanted for me. But for the life of me, I couldn’t imagine why anyone would want the position of Alpha.
Ethan leaned in and kissed me on the tip of the nose. “The
